New Canaan Fall Events 2026: Key Dates and Local Closures

Pale limestone home entrance with an oak door, white sash window, bluestone steps and russet Japanese maple leaves.

"They say it's four weeks. I'm saying it's six weeks." Public Works Director Tiger Mann said this to the Board of Selectmen about the repaving of Route 106, as NewCanaanite reported. He also told residents to "just avoid the area. Just to drive the detour, not try to go through it."

His estimate frames the rest of the season. Fall 2026 in New Canaan has plenty of good events, and each one sits beside a closure or a cutoff. The road closure lasts weeks. The park and street closures last a morning or an afternoon. After those come the cutoffs, which include earlier tour departures, a leaf deadline and a final market Saturday.

The longest closure is on Silvermine Road

The Department of Public Works lists Route 106, also called Silvermine Road, between Valley Road and Canoe Hill Road as closed daily from October 7 to mid-November. Detours are posted. Only emergency vehicles, school buses and local traffic can get through. The town's construction updates page still listed that stretch as closed to traffic in its October 9 update.

The road is closed for so long because of how much work it needs. Mann told the selectmen that crews "have to mill out the entire surface down nine inches, fix the base and then repave everything for the entire road," and that the paving had already been "delayed twice." The town's Aquarion road construction page lists Route 106, Silvermine Road, Valley Road and South Avenue among the roads affected by Aquarion's 36-inch water main, the Southwest Regional Pipeline. NewCanaanite reports that the water main was made public in 2019 and started in 2022. After the Silvermine stretch, Mann said, Aquarion will work on the shorter piece of Valley Road between Silvermine and the bridge into Wilton, which should take about a week.

There is no firm date for the other half of that project. DPW says final paving on South Avenue and Farm Road "is suspended until further notice," and a new schedule is still being developed. Both roads were open to traffic as of the October 9 update.

Mann's six-week estimate from the October 7 start lands in mid-to-late November. Every October event below happens while that detour is in place. The Silvermine side of town will feel it most on weekends.

Two Sundays when the town closes its own spaces

Within that longer closure, the town closes two of its own spaces on two October Sundays. These are deliberate, short and announced in advance.

Sunday, October 18: Waveny Park, sunrise to noon. First Selectman Dionna Carlson's October letter says Waveny Park will be closed to everyone except participants in Caffeine & Carburetors from sunrise until noon. Proceeds go to the Waveny Park Conservancy's work to beautify and preserve the park. The organizer's own calendar lists the date as Sunday, October 18. Anyone who usually walks a dog or visits the new inclusive playground near Orchard Field on Sunday mornings will need to wait until after noon. The playground opened June 12 with a rubber play surface, structures for children of different ages and abilities, and shaded seating.

Sunday, October 25: Elm Street, noon to 2 p.m. The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce closes Elm Street to cars for its Halloween Block Party. It is free, open to all ages, welcomes pets and features School of Rock. Elm Street has already had parking restrictions this month. DPW suspended overnight parallel parking between Main Street and Park Street on the night of October 8 while it restriped the stalls.

The Halloween events then move to the evening. The New Canaan Nature Center's Halloween Spooktacular is on October 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person, and children two and under are free. The event page shows a registration link and a "Registration Coming Soon" notice at the same time, so check that tickets are actually on sale before you plan around it.

The cultural calendar ends earlier each day

The events with the most architectural interest have a different limit than the road or the park. Their schedules are set by daylight.

The Glass House's Golden Hour tours on Thursday, October 22, leave at 4:30 and 5 p.m. Tickets are $95. In November and December, tours leave no later than 2:30 p.m. The site is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, closed November 26 through 28 for Thanksgiving, and the 2026 season ends December 14. Golden Hour on October 22 is the last late-day visit this year. After that, a visit means a weekday lunch break or an early weekend afternoon. The Glass House's visit page has the full schedule.

Grace Farms has two ticketed events this season, and on one of those days it closes to regular visitors.

Date Event Time Tickets
Saturday, Oct. 24 Founders Architecture Talk 2 to 3 p.m. $25 general, $20 members, $12.50 students
Sunday, Nov. 15 Nemanja Radulović and Double Sens 3 to 4:45 p.m. $125, $100, $75, $25 students

Grace Farms says it will be open only to event ticketholders on Sunday, November 15. On that day, the concert is the only way in.

November is about deadlines

From November on, the calendar has fewer events and more deadlines. They come one after another.

Civic dates come first. Early voting runs at Town Hall from Monday, October 19, through Sunday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours extend to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on October 27 and 29. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to candidates, the ballot includes six yes-or-no questions on proposed changes to the Town Charter. The October Town Hall newsletter prints all six questions and explains where to find the Charter Revision Commission's final report.

Leaf season comes next, and the rules depend on your zoning district. DPW's program covers only properties in zoning districts of one acre or less. Leaves need to be:

  1. Raked to the curb in a windrow, not a pile.
  2. Free of brush and debris.
  3. Loose, not in plastic bags, which clog the vacuums and hoses.
  4. Out by Sunday, November 29. The town will not collect leaves put out after that date.

Collection starts Monday, November 2. DPW asks residents in the 2- and 4-acre zones to compost leaves on their own property, and crews will not collect there. The Town's Composting Facility on Lapham Road, near the Waveny Park entrance, is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Saturday, December 12. Contractors dropping off leaves need a permission form signed by the New Canaan property owner. The form is available at the Highway Department at 139 Lakeview Avenue or on the town site. The compost is usually given back to residents the following spring.

The Veterans Day service is on Wednesday, November 11, on the Town Hall steps. It starts promptly at 10:55 a.m., and residents are encouraged to gather at 10:30. Carlson's letter says this year's program marks the official end of New Canaan's America250 celebrations. If it rains, the program moves to the Town Meeting Room on the second floor of Town Hall.

The farmers market runs the longest

The New Canaan Farmers Market outlasts nearly everything else on this list. It runs Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, in the Lumber Yard Lot at 244 Elm Street by the train station. The market's homepage still says "We have moved!", but the move happened back in 2021, when the market left the Center School Lot for the Lumber Yard.

The market's own pages give two different end dates. Its homepage lists the season as April 11 through December 19, 2026, and NewCanaanite's coverage of the town-approved season matches that. The events page calls December 20 the final day. December 19 is a Saturday and is supported by two sources. Even so, confirm with the market before planning a holiday shop around the last day.

The 2026 vendor roster includes Gazy Brothers Farm, Henny Penny Farm, Woodland Farm, Seacoast Mushrooms, New Petal Flower Farm and The Bee Love Project. Prepared-food vendors include Wave Hill Breads, Michele's Pies, Grumpy Dumpling and Bongo & Capacci Gourmet Pasta. Edgewise Kitchen offers kitchen-knife sharpening.

That leaves a clear order for the season. Silvermine Road reopens sometime in mid-to-late November. Leaves must be at the curb by November 29. The compost facility closes December 12, and the Glass House season ends December 14. The market's last Saturday is December 19.
